Trying out the beret

It’s Wear A Hat Day today, so I thought it might be timely to post these images of me trying out the beret (it’s also been FOREVER since I last posted, I’m sorry). The beret has been one of the biggest trends this winter, and looks set to continue throughout spring, and though I don’t often mess around with trends too much because I generally look back and think WTF was I actually thinking, I have been admiring the beret for quite some time.

In fact, my gorgeous friend Cassie (she’s the ultimate cool girl) has been rocking a beret since circa 2013 when I met her, and I’ve always loved how she wears it so well. She’s still wearing it well now, five years later, and, actually, Cassie is probably the very reason the beret is so huge right now. If you saw her, you’d see why. Anyway, it’s very much who she is and so it suits her; for me, it feels slightly alien – I’m very aware that I’m wearing it.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m a fan of a good hat, but mostly I veer towards the occasion piece for a wedding or a straw fedora on holiday. This everyday hat territory is a bit scary to me; some wear it so casually it becomes part of who they are, like their smile or their laugh. I feel a bit like I’m wearing a sign that says “I’m pretending” and that’s something I’m over; I no longer want to feel self conscious in any way. So although I adore hats, and I adore this beret, I must admit it’s not for me.

So, I’ve decided to give it away as a gift to one of my readers. If you’d like to try and win it – it’s very posh, from House of Bruar and is 100% wool, usually costs £20 – then please comment below before Friday 6 April with a hat related story that you think I’d love.

I’m wearing: coat, Damart; t-shirt, TK Maxx; jeans, Topshop; boots, Carvela; hat, House of Bruar; bag, Modalu (the mini version).

If you have time, please check out Wear A Hat Day online – it’s a day dedicated to raising awareness of the work being carried out by Brain Tumour Research – only 1% of cancer research funding goes towards brain tumour research. They’re working hard to change this, as well as creating a network of experts in sustainable research, but I’m sure they’d love your support too.

Loving the beret and it really suits you. Like you I love a hat but don’t often wear one.

Only really wear a woolly hat with a pom pom in the snow! Find they give me awful hat hair though! Would love to be brave and branch out my hat wearing!!

Haha, hat hair is a thing for most and it sucks! I sometimes tuck my hair inside and usually try and find a hat that is ever so slightly loose around my head to avoid the dreaded hat line. x

I love hats. A source of pride for me is I fascinated a colleague who never indulged in hat passion to branch out and experiment outside her standard winter wooly. I couldn’t believe people would only own one hat. I entertained her with colours and accessories on my head every day in winter. X

I love this Suzanne, thank you for sharing such an inspiring story! I love a woolly hat, but it’s not very adventurous. I also love a good straw hat for summer – the glamour of it, teamed with a pair of cat eye sunglasses, will never fade! x

Lovely beret. My favourite hat was a wooly took with a pompom on top, striped in various bright colours. Sadly, I lost it. I think I left it on the tube. I’ve never worn a beret. It looks lovely on you.

Oh no, I’m so sorry you lost it Amy! Have you ever seen another one to match up to it? You should try a beret! x
