The thing about white jeans

As if finding the perfect pair of jeans isn’t hard enough, summer goes and throws that even trickier situation of finding the perfect pair of jeans again, this time in white.

Unless you have the legs of a supermodel, finding a pair of white jeans that make you feel as confident as a pair of black jeans isn’t easy. I’m all for everyone wearing exactly what they want to wear – but I reckon we all want to find the version that makes us feel good, yes? As a curvy woman I know all too well the difficulties that come with having a smaller waist, larger hip ratio and finding jeans to accommodate this can be difficult. I tend to lean towards high waists which do help, but the quality and composition of the fabric can make a huge difference, as can the way the jeans are cut in the leg.

Some of my favourite jeans labels include Topshop, Citizens of Humanity, Next, and Baukjen – but buying the same style in white doesn’t always work, mostly because of fabric. Too often I’ve ordered my favourite jeans in white only to be disappointed at how see-through they are, revealing not only my pants but my cellulite too. As I get older, I care less – but I still want to feel my best so I can worry less.

These jeans I’m wearing are Ralph Lauren, which I found at Bicester Village around six years ago. I’ve probably worn them only a handful of times, but last summer I cut them at the ankles (my wonderful mum hemmed them for me) and suddenly they seem more wearable – that little glimpse of the ankle makes them feel cooler, more modern. Crumpling around the ankle almost highlights my less-than-slender legs. A mid-rise, skinny-to-straight-leg, they have a bit of stretch but the fabric is supportive too, and the zip fly means there’s less bulk around my tummy. They’re comfy – but I do wear them on days when I’m feeling less bloated, and usually with a loose knit or blouse. Each time I dare try them on, I’m reminded how much I actually love them. I have two more pairs, both from Baukjen – one is a wide leg culottes in off-white (Gail), the other a more tapered straight leg in white (Elina). All three are good at adding a bit of summer style to my wardrobe, even on coolers days.
