For over two weeks I tried Listerine’s Advanced White multi-action mouthwash, which claims to be “the most effective whitening mouthwash” compared to market leaders. I don’t disbelieve this, however, my teeth aren’t noticeably whiter after religiously using it morning and night. That said, as with most Listerine products, my teeth did feel cleaner and my gums free of build-up and residue – which hopefully means that staining from tea, coffee and dark foods was reduced or prevented. The Advanced White didn’t feel particularly different to Listerine’s standard mouthwash, so if you’re looking for a change in the colour of your teeth I’d recommend a professional whitening product or a trip to your dentist/orthodontist.
However, something that did stand out about the Advanced White was the free Maybelline red lipstick! Now, I don’t really wear lippy (because, ironically, I don’t like my teeth) but, perhaps because of my comms background, I am a fan of the whitening product paired with a red lippy as a marketing gimmick; what better way to sell a great smile? Especially as the research behind Advanced White shows that 47% of women think that red lipstick makes their teeth seem whiter…
The product itself gets 2/5 because I don’t think its claim to be a whitening product is particularly well-founded. But, if I were to think of it as a standard mouthwash I’d give it a 4/5. Either way, it gets an extra point for the clever marketing.
Pick up a 500ml bottle of Listerine Advanced White mouthwash (£5.49) at Boots, Superdrug, and supermarkets to claim your free Maybelline New York Colour Sensation red lipstick (worth £6.99), by using your unique code online.
I have to agree, I don’t have overly stained teeth anyway, but really not a huge difference. X
