I Left My Heart Downunder

Rosemount Australian Fashion Week (Spring Summer 2010/11) took place last month and although I wasn’t there in body, I was there in cyber spirit. Australian designers have a perfect combination of high fashion infused with the practicalities and aesthetics of Aussie life, and Aussie girls always show off the results in a devastatingly gorgeous way. They all seem to have healthy, glowing, toned skin (thanks to all their fun-loving, outdoor activity), which is often on display in short shorts or mini skirts, or even just plain old swimwear. However, I think it’s their great attitude that really sets off their great style.
Great style which is perfectly suited to each of Australia’s cities, the perfect backdrops for fashion. From chic Sydney (one of my most favourite cities in the world) to cosmopolitan Melbourne (a particular favourite for flea markets and new design talent, and because of my rellies – see how I fit in with the lingo?) to pretty Perth, where you can find aspects of urban life in the inner city or elements of rural life down by the glorious river. Each city brings a different vibe, but always with that Aussie underpinning. In clothing terms I see Sydney as a sassy Camilla and Marc dress, Melbourne as a Zimmerman skirt and Perth as a some relaxed but totally on trend Ksubi denim.
Despite loving RAFW as much as a fat kid loves cake (although come to think of it, that’s me too), with it comes a touch of sadness. Watching the runway videos, clicking the catwalk thumbnails and following the numerous blogs all remind me how much I miss Australia and the people there, and the fashion and the weather and all things Aussie. Except the bugs, sorry dudes.
Australia, do you miss me too?
