February. The shortest month of the year, the one that we love so much for its swift appearance and departure. It’s a month that doesn’t outstay its welcome, unlike long, dark January. A bit unfair, maybe – January does inspire a lot of healthy living, after all – but February promises a hint of what’s to come. Isn’t that more exciting than green juice and no more prosecco? February whispers that winter is almost, nearly, over, that spring is oh-so-close – snowdrops crop up even in the darkest of corners, the grass and plants become more fragrant, and, some days, sunshine brings traces of gold to our week.
February has me feeling nostalgic and expectant all at once. Yes, it’s still cold (freezing in fact, sometimes with snow) but the days are a bit longer, the morning and night skies a bit lighter, and when the sun is out it feels good on my face, warm on my back. Those are the days to venture out in the thickest of knitwear sans coat – not for long, and layered with merino vests and woolly scarves, but still, we can be outside without a puffer jacket and, well, doesn’t that feel just gorgeous? For those blissful moments, February, I thank you.
