Fashionably Too Late

The 5th annual Scottish Fashion Awards were held on Sunday 20th June at the Glasgow Science Centre. I’ve supported the SFAs 100% since the inaugural event in 2006, and I was super excited to be on the list for entry to this year’s award ceremony.
I couldn’t wait to meet more of the fashion glitterati – Antonio Beradi, Jonathan Saunders, Peter Jensen, Louise Gray and Holly Fulton. I also wanted to have another chat with the lovely Graeme Armour and the fabulous Graeme Black, who has been a great supporter of the Scottish Fashion Awards since the beginning. (He was awarded the Scottish Designer of the Year 2009 and fully deserved the recognition for his own label – check his website to see his latest collection). Celebrities lined up to walk the red carpet included chart-topper Diana Vickers and the incredible Paolo Nutini, and industry insiders on the judging panel ranged from Dolly Jones (Editor of Vogue.com) to Hilary Alexander (Fashion Director of The Daily Telegraph) to Paula Reed (Style Director of Grazia). Even David Gandy had RSVP’d yes to the event and flew in from Milan – definitely a Dolce model I’d like to quiz on the tartan carpet!
I’ve been a huge fan of the event founder, Tessa Hartmann, for years (she helped put Scotland on the fashion map) and I couldn’t wait to chat with her about her favourite new design talent, the behind-the-scenes gossip and the work of the Scottish Fashion Council once I got to the event.
But I missed it.
That’s right, I missed the entire thing.
You know, yesterday I graduated from the University of Dundee in a Master of Arts and I often wonder exactly how I managed this, especially when I make silly mistakes with explosively disappointing consequences. I had been looking forward to the Scottish Fashion Awards 2010 for weeks, and yet, despite having a brain, I missed it. I somehow scribbled a note in my diary for the following Sunday! I couldn’t believe my eyes when, on Monday morning, I opened my emails to find a press release following the event! I’d been so stupid, and my impending graduation suddenly seemed a bit phony – I couldn’t even keep track of my diary! (Actually, I’ve decided to blame my graduation for the mishap: the degree itself involved a lot of brain activity and the anxiety the week running up to the ceremony obviously took over my common sense).
Anyway, obviously I was so disappointed to miss the 2010 Scottish Fashion Awards, but I caught up with all the gossip on Vogue.com. The event was a great success as usual and everyone who did get the date right seemed to have a brilliant time.
I believe that Scotland is home to many of the fashion industry’s top players. I think Scotland deserves to be recognised for the design talent it produces, as well as the communicators and models that come out of Scotland with a voice. Scotland has so much inspiration to offer – the country is certainly making its mark on the fashion schedule, and next year, I’ll be sure not to miss it.
