Mohair Shopping Evening

I’m loving all the independent boutiques and retailers in the city just now. Missy LaLa’s is still going strong after a few years in Crichton Street, RARA and the Pretty Vacant Show Rooms is buzzing with creative and students, while Lovely Things on Dock Street is perfect for gifts and interiors. In Broughty Ferry, Tiger Lily Boutique is the go-to shop for trendy, feminine clothes and Mohair – a favourite of Lorraine Kelly – enjoys continued success. Even more encouraging is that new boutiques continue to open; Maggie’s Farm (the award-winning vintage boutique on Union Street) is opening another boutique, while Rosy Tuesday opened last month opposite the DCA. This weekend, another vintage shop, Carnaby’s, opens on Commercial Street.
So, when I heard that Mohair were holding a shopping evening with Champagne and exclusive discounts, I made a point of rushing from the office to Broughty Ferry. Mohair is beautiful, with chandeliers, opulent mirrors, vintage trunks and grand chairs decorating the spacious but intimate boutique. It seems that the founder, Mhairi McDermott, really has found her niche; like a small child, Mohair has really grown into its personality over the past 18 months and is now a luxurious yet not intimidating boutique, which houses a wonderfully selected collection of gorgeous dresses, beautiful handbags and unique jewellery by Martine Wester and Alex Monroe. There are also great bits ‘n’ bobs; Miller Harris fragrances and candles, soaps in vintage-esque wrapping, pretty umbrellas, cosy winter socks and lovely scarves all make for special Christmas gifts or a nice wee treat for yourself.
I was in my element last night and could have easily spent a fortune had I not been under Shopping-Watch surveillance by my mother. A dove grey handbag with gold chain is a modern classic and would be as perfect with a jeans and blazer combo as with an LBD, while the dragonfly necklace by Alex Monroe is still calling my name as it has been since the start of summer. Some art-deco style earrings were almost enough to make me book an appointment to have my ears pierced, while a black leather and gold brocade dress (very Dolce AW12) and fur jacket are dying to go to Milan with me in the New Year.

If you missed the shopping evening, don’t stress – just take a trip to Broughty Ferry and pop in to Mohair, pronto. (As in, this weekend). I’m planning to return A-SAP – minus Mummy and her eagle eyes.
